China Clay is a naturally hydrated Aluminium Silicate. With the chemical composition Al2Si2O5 (OH)4. It is a layered silicate, with one tetrahedral sheet linked through oxygen atoms to one octahedral sheet of alumina octahedral. It has a low shrink-swell capacity and a low cation exchange capacity. Therefore China Clay does not swell on adding water & Alumina present in Clay do not form Isomorphous series with any other metallic compound.
